Major John Sheirling moved to Paulding County in 1984 after he completed Basic and Advanced Individual Training with the Army National Guard. Major Sheirling continued to serve his country in the National Guard until he retired in 2004 where he received an honorable discharge after 20 years of service. Not only did Major Sheirling serve his country in the United States Army National Guard, he simultaneously served the Paulding County community as a Firefighter and Deputy Sheriff.
PAULDING COUNTY SERVICE
Major Sheirling entered the public safety profession in 1993 as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT with the Paulding County Fire Department. In 1997 he became a fulltime Firefighter/EMT with the Paulding County Fire Department. During his time in the fire services, Major Sheirling became the volunteer medic on the Paulding County Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. Team. His passion for law enforcement eventually led him into transferring to the Sheriff’s Office in 2002 as a full time Deputy.
Major Sheirling began his career in law enforcement with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff working in the Uniform Patrol Division. Major Sheirling eventually transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division where he later earned the rank of Sergeant. From there, Major Sheirling was promoted to the Director of Training over the Paulding County Sheriff's Office Training Center where became a Lieutenant.
Major Sheirling was then promoted to be the Assistant Jail Commander earning the rank of Captain. In 2020, Major Sheirling was elevated to the position of Division Commander of the Juvenile Division where he now serves as the Major.
Major Sheirling serves the Sheriff's Office in duel capacities. Not only is he the Division Commander of the Juvenile Division, but he is also the S.W.A.T. Team Commander. Major Sheirling has held virtually every position on the Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. team during his tenure as an operator. He is a servant leader and his mantra is and always has been, "Lead From The Front"!
Over the course of his career, Major Sheirling has achieved 5,552 hours of P.O.S.T. training. He has also obtained an Associate’s Degree. Major Sheirling has achieved the following P.O.S.T. training and certifications during his career:
