Program History

History of UGA Cooperative Extension

Paulding County has supplied residents with county agent assistance since 1915 when the County was primarily driven by agriculture production. At that time less than 8,000 people lived in the County and they depended on themselves to produce their own food supplies.

The head of the family produced consumable food items while the lady of the family preserved these food items until such time that they were needed to feed the family. The children assisted in all types of chores around the farm as needed.

Current Role

In the 21st century, Extension plays a somewhat different role. County agents provide information through:

  • Computer email
  • Distance learning
  • Group seminars
  • One-on-one workshops
  • Phone consultations

Projects

Some of the types of projects that agents work on are:

  • Horticulture production
  • Household budgets
  • Life skills
  • Nutrition
  • Team building
  • Water conservation
  • Water quality
  • Youth leadership development
